Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – In a momentous stride for both local communities and the mining sector in Sierra Leone, CTC Mining Sierra Leone Limited has made a substantial Le 2.3 million surface rent payment to the Maforki and Marampa Chiefdoms in Port Loko District. This payment signifies the second instalment of rent disbursed by the company to these local communities since the commencement of their operations in the country.
Despite being operational for just a year, CTC Mining SL Limited has already achieved significant milestones, exporting an impressive 350,000 tons of Bauxite. The company’s success has laid the groundwork for ambitious expansion plans aimed at further enhancing its operations.
A pivotal aspect of CTC Mining SL Limited’s expansion strategy, as highlighted by Chief Operating Officer Dr Yves El Mallat, is the proposal to construct port and haul road infrastructure by the end of 2024. These infrastructure developments are poised to streamline operations, enhance efficiency, and expedite export processes.
Project Coordinator, David Kanume Koroma, reiterated the company’s commitment to empowering local communities by providing them access to modern technology and equipment. “This initiative seeks to bolster the skills and capabilities of locals, ensuring their active involvement and contribution to mining activities,” Koroma emphasized.
Government officials, including Resident Minister of the North-West Region, Ambassador Umaru Bun Wurie, have urged community authorities to utilize the rent funds to actualize further development initiatives within their chiefdoms.
Paramount Chiefs of both Maforki and Marampa Chiefdoms expressed gratitude to the company for engaging in large-scale mining operations within their communities. They welcomed the company’s endeavours to bring development to the region and pledged to utilize the rent payments to advance community development initiatives.
This recent development underscores the escalating significance of responsible and sustainable mining practices in Sierra Leone. According to CTC, “We strive not only to contribute to the nation’s economic growth but also to demonstrate our commitment to fostering positive relationships with local communities and promoting their development.” MJB/7/5/2024
